JMT provided structural steel detailing services for Project Whale, Amazon's next-generation robotics fulfillment center in the Wilmington, North Carolina region. Designed to support high-volume e-commerce operations throughout the southeastern United States, the facility represents one of the largest industrial developments in North Carolina and a significant investment in regional logistics infrastructure.
Spanning more than 3 million square feet across multiple operational levels, the facility was designed to integrate advanced robotics, automated material handling systems, inventory storage, packing operations, and shipping functions within a highly efficient fulfillment environment. The scale and complexity of the project required extensive coordination among structural, architectural, process, mechanical, and electrical disciplines to support sophisticated operational systems and accelerated construction schedules.
As the detailing partner, JMT developed comprehensive 3D steel models and fabrication-ready detailing packages to support the facility's extensive structural steel framework. Through BIM-based coordination, constructability reviews, and proactive clash detection, JMT helped streamline fabrication and field erection while supporting integration of automated systems, building infrastructure, and operational equipment throughout the facility.
When complete, Project Whale will serve as a major fulfillment hub for Amazon's regional distribution network while creating more than 1,000 jobs and strengthening the Wilmington area's position as a growing logistics and distribution center.
