The Elon University Engineering & Physics Building is a 65,000‑square‑foot academic and laboratory facility located within Elon University’s new Innovation Quad in Elon, North Carolina. Completed in 2022, the project consists of the interconnected Founders Hall and Innovation Hall, which together serve as the primary home for Elon’s rapidly expanding Engineering Program and Department of Physics. The buildings were developed as part of the university’s long‑term master plan to support STEM education through modern, flexible, and interdisciplinary learning environments.
From a structural and constructability perspective, the project required coordination across laboratory, prototyping, classroom, and collaborative spaces with varying structural and service demands. The facility includes high‑bay and double‑height spaces, advanced engineering and physics labs, maker and prototyping areas, faculty offices, and flexible instructional zones. Structural systems were designed to support heavy laboratory loads, vibration‑sensitive spaces, and open collaboration areas while maintaining architectural integration with Elon’s predominantly Neo‑Georgian campus context. The building incorporates exposed steel and concrete elements internally, increasing coordination demands between structure, architecture, and building systems—an environment well suited to JMT Consultants’ expertise in precision steel and concrete detailing and delegated design.
